Hyperpigmentation is a skin concern that occurs when the skin produces too much melanin, the pigment that gives color to the skin, hair, and eyes. This can result in the appearance of dark spots, or patches on the skin. Hyperpigmentation can affect people of all skin tones, especially those with dark skin. How can you get your hyperpigmentation under control? We’ll give you the five most effective tips to say reclaim your beautiful skin.
What Causes Hyperpigmentation?
There are several causes of hyperpigmentation, including sun exposure, hormonal changes, and certain medications. It can also be a result of acne, inflammation, or injury to the skin. Whatever the cause, if you have darker skin, you are often left with dark spots that are difficult to get rid of.
Luckily, it is a harmless condition that is treatable.
Work with a Dermatologist
First, determine the cause of your dark spots with a dermatologist. That way, you can find the best treatment plan to get rid of hyperpigmentation. Many people blindly treat their hyperpigmentation by purchasing products designed to treat this common skin condition, but we don’t recommend that approach. You will save yourself a lot of time and money by first talking to a dermatologist.
Wear Sunscreen
It is a common misconception that people with darker skin tones do not need to wear sunscreen. Everybody needs sunscreen, especially if you struggle with hyperpigmentation. Too much sun exposure can worsen the problem, making those dark spots even darker. We recommend wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen whenever you leave the house – even on cloudy days.
Wear a Serum
There are several serums on the market that target different skin conditions, so look for one that specifically treats hyperpigmentation. Make sure some of the active ingredients are the ones we already included, like niacinamide, retinoids (i.e., retinol), and glycolic acid to reduce darkness and increase skin radiance.
Choose the Right Ingredients
Look for ingredients that are tested and proven to treat hyperpigmentation. Some of our favorite ingredients are:
- Hydroquinone: This skin-lightening agent is commonly used to treat hyperpigmentation by inhibiting the production of melanin in the skin.
- Retinoids: Retinoids, like retinol, are a class of vitamin A derivatives that can help to improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation by increasing cell turnover and reducing the production of melanin. They may also help to improve the texture and tone of the skin.
- Kojic acid: This is a natural skin-lightening agent that is derived from mushrooms. It works by inhibiting the production of melanin in the skin. Use Kojic acid in combination with other skin-lightening agents for the best results.
- Azelaic acid: This is a natural compound that is found in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. It has skin-lightening and anti-inflammatory properties and is often used to treat hyperpigmentation caused by acne.
- Niacinamide: Also known as vitamin B3, niacinamide has been shown to be effective in reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation. It may also help to improve the overall appearance of the skin by reducing inflammation and increasing hydration.
Improve Your Skincare Regimen
If you’re serious about getting rid of hyperpigmentation, don’t just use serums. Look for cleansers, moisturizers, and other skincare products with ingredients that remove dark spots. Don’t know where to start?
- Apply a gentle cleanser in the morning, like the Foaming Face Cleanser, which has soothing aloe and tea tree oil.
- Choose the Gle Face Moisturizer with Niacinamide as your evening moisturizer.
- Apply the Goodnight Cream at the end of your nightly skincare routine, which contains retinol.
If you have sensitive skin, you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult with a dermatologist before starting a new skincare regimen or adding new products.
